Maths Island Project

Llantilio Pertholey School

A Lead Creative Schools project.

Delivered in association with Arts Council Wales, Lead Creative Schools explores topics such as literacy, numeracy, wellbeing or science in the context of a creative project.

As lead practitioner, I designed a project where Key Stage 2 children designed and made their own 'maths games;' set on a themed island, there was a maths-based puzzle to solve on each.  Not only did the pupils design their own maths problem, they also employed maths skills in designing and making their island floor (a textile project which involved lots of measuring), collecting data regarding maths topics and budgeting for materials.  They also employed creative skills to design and realise their island themes, and developed their teamwork and confidence along the way.

The project culminated in a Maths Carnival, where parents and other classes in the school were invited to come an test out the games.
