#2868 was conceived as a visual response to the 2868 Syrian refugees who lost their lives trying to cross the Mediterranean by July 2016. Workshops were held where participants were shown how to make origami boats out of newspapers, and contribute to the growing installation.   Anyone was welcome to add their contribution, however small.

The sheer number of so many boats in a space is overwhelming. The flimsy newspaper takes on a new, if temporary strength when reformed, and the negative media transforms into a mark of respect for human life. The installation is ongoing; one month after its title was decided upon, the number it was referencing became obselete as the number of drowned refugees grew.
